While there are no Departmental requirements, per se, as to when in a student’s Dickinson career individual courses must be taken, careful planning is encouraged to insure that prerequisites and other conditions are met in a timely manner to complete the major. Particularly for double-majors and those who plan to travel abroad during part of their education, close work with an advisor is essential to successful planning.
In general, majors and minors must complete 100-level courses before proceeding to higher-numbered courses, and are required to take the two theory sequences (125-126 and 245-246) in adjacent years.
With those recommendations in mind, the following is an example of a successful four-year plan for the Music Major:
125 (fall only), 126 (spring only); 101 and/or 102 (these may be taken out of sequence)
245 (fall only), 246 (spring only), 101 and/or 102, possibly 255 for composition or theory emphasis if simultaneous with 245
remaining 200-level courses; 351-354 seminars
all 400-level courses
Music majors who wish to study abroad during their junior year need to take particular care in planning their schedule (see Study-Abroad Programs), and in general are required to complete the core requirements (101-102, 125-126, 245-246) before their junior year.
