The Red Devils posted their best record since 1994, finishing 10-7 on the year and 4-5 in the CC.  The team set a new school record scoring 35 goals on the year, eclipsing the old mark of 32 set in 1992.  The defense also had an outstanding year in front of Giorgio with seven shutouts while allowing just over 1.5 goals per game.

Devils Drop Out of Play-off Race With 1-0 Loss
October 23, 2001

(Carlisle, Pa) – Despite a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 13-2 edge in corners, Dickinson could not get by Franklin & Marshall, dropping a 1-0 decision in Centennial Conference field hockey action Tuesday.

Kate Heintzelman scored the game’s only goal with 8:38 remaining in the first half and that would be all they needed as they improved to 8-9 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Dickinson needed the win to survive and was also relying on help from Gettysburg and Washington.  The Bullets dropped a 1-0 decision at Johns Hopkins which would have denied the Devils a bid as well.

Marissa Giorgio (Rehersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) made five saves on the afternoon as did F&M’s Jenny Linder.

Dickinson will now await a possible bid to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.

September 29, 2001

(Carlisle, Pa) – The Dickinson College field hockey team improved to 6-3 (2-2) on the year with a 1-0 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins (2-6, 1-2). The win is the Red Devils’ second straight in Conference play.

Dickinson controlled the field for most of the game, but was unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Despite nine shots on goal in the first half, it took a Jessica Sedgwick (Easton, Md) goal on Kendra Shirley’s (Gilford, NH/Gilford) assists off a corner with 1:30 remaining in regulation to propel Dickinson over Johns Hopkins.

Michelle Coughlin (Hingham, Ma/Hingham) and Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/Collegiate School) led a Red Devil defense that allowed only two shots on goal and kept Johns Hopkins from establishing any consistent offensive attack.  Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va) was a key to the Devils’ transition game with and solid performance in the midfield.

Devils Blank Bullets 1-0 in Overtime
September 25, 2001

(Carlisle, Pa) -- Senior midfielder Kendra Shirley (Gilford, NH) scored with just 3:50 remaining in the first overtime to give Dickinson a 1-0 Centennial Conference win over visiting Gettysburg on Tuesday.   Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va) assisted on the goal as the Red Devils claimed their first victory over Gettysburg since 1995.

Dickinson (5-3, 1-2) was on the defensive for the better part of the game as the Bullets gained an 18-11 shot advantage.  The Devils turned up the pressure late in the game, forcing a pair of penalty corners with no time remaining, but Shirley’s shot on the final attempt went just wide of the cage.

Gettysburg gained possession early in the period, but the defense held until Dickinson finally broke through and shifted the momentum in their favor.  Freshman Jennifer Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was the intended target of Carlow’s pass, but was tripped up as Gettysburg goalkeeper Jessy O’Neill came out to challenge.  The ball continued through the circle and Shirley was there to finish with her third game-winner of the season.
