Carlow, Giorgio Named All-Region, All-CC Dickinson College field hockey players Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) and Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) were both recently named to the STX/NFHCA Division III All-South Region team. Carlow also earned All-Centennial Conference second-team honors for her outstanding play as a forward and in the midfield. The junior tri-captain led the Red Devils in scoring with eight goals and three assists. She tallied two game-winning goals and was a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty strokes this season. Giorgio earned her second straight selection to the All-Region team and made her third appearance on the All-Centennial squad. The senior goaltender posted five solo shutouts this season, while sharing two others as Dickinson came within one of the school record. Giorgio started in 72 consecutive games throughout her career, recording a school record 21 shutouts in four seasons. Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) was named to the All-Centennial team for the second time. The junior forward was second on the team in scoring with six goals, including three game-winners, and a team-best five assists. She started all 18 games for the Red Devils and was also one of just six field hockey players named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll as well. The Red Devils finished 8-10 on the year, facing some of the best competition Division III had to offer this season. They faced seven nationally-ranked opponents, including four ranked in the top ten.
F&M Survives 1-0 Double-OT Marathon (Lancaster, Pa) Overtime has not been a friendly adversary for the Dickinson College field hockey this season, and Tuesday was no exception. The Red Devils played outstanding all afternoon only to have a penalty stroke in the 83rd minute give Franklin & Marshall a golden opportunity. Ali Reindle converted the stroke into the lower right-hand quarter to lift the Diplomats to a 1-0 victory, keeping their play-off hopes alive for at least a few more minutes. F&M will advance to the Centennial Conference tournament as Gettysburg knocked-off 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins 2-1 on Tuesday as well. The Red Devils received outstanding play from midfielders Jenny Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean). Senior Jessica Sedgwick (Easton, Md/Easton) turned in a strong performance as well in her final contest as did defenders Amy Rankin (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Erin Kelly (Lititz, Pa/Warwick). Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) rounded out a spectacular career in goal as well. Giorgio made four saves on the afternoon and was just one shut-out shy of her season-best. She will graduate as the school record holder, posting a remarkable 21 career shutouts and a 1.35 goals against average this season. Boxscore Devils Hold-Off Haverford 2-1 (Haverford, Pa) Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/The Collegiate School) and Jessica Sedgwick (Easton, Pa/Easton) each scored to lead Dickinson College past Haverford 2-1 in Centennial Conference field hockey on Saturday. Hyslop put the Devils in front 1-0, scoring off an assist from Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) on a penalty corner with 14:37 remaining in the first half. Sedgwick tallied the eventual game-winner nine minutes after the break with an assist from sophomore Jenny Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase). Haverford's Diana Postemsky spoiled the Devils' shutout with 18:20 remaining off a pass from Judy Mayer. The Red Devils wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Lancaster to face Franklin & Marshall at 3:00 pm. Boxscore Eighth-Ranked Bears Top Devils 2-0 (Carlisle, Pa) Ursinus College junior Jess Shellaway scored a pair of goals to lead her eighth-ranked field hockey team past Dickinson 2-0 on Tuesday. Shellaway tallied the first goal with 9:32 remaining in the first half then blasted a shot into the cage with just over six minutes to go in the game. The Red Devils gave an outstanding defensive performance, led by senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio's (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) 21 saves. The Devils also made six defensive saves in the contest as Ursinus tallied 29 shots on the day. Junior Erin Pollock (Cleveland Hts, Oh/Cleveland Hts) led the defense with two defensive saves while seniors Erin Kelly (Lititz, Pa/Warwick) and Amy Rankin (Auburn, NY/Auburn) were solid as well. Senior Jess Sedgwick (Easton, Pa/Easton) and junior Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) controlled play in the midfield. Carlow had a team-high six shots and also made a defensive save. Dickinson continued to pressure the Bears throughout the game, but the Ursinus defense was unyielding as well. Nicole Monatesti and JoAnne Barbari combined to make five stops. The Red Devils will be on the road for their final two games of the regular season. They travel to Haverford for a 12:00 game on Saturday, then head to Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday. Boxscore Carlow Hat-Trick Paces Red Devils (Carlisle, Pa) Junior midfielder Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) wasted no time in giving Dickinson College a 1-0 lead over Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Carlow added two more goals for her first career hat-trick as the Red Devil field hockey team posted a 6-0 win. Carlow scored just 29 seconds into the game and freshman Lauren Moag (Baltimore, Md/McDonogh) put the Devils in front 2-0 at the 31:55 mark on an assist from Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick). Carlow then tallied two more goals in just over a span of two minutes to give Dickinson a 4-0 advantage with 10:11 remaining in the first half. That also gave her one more goal than twin sister Alyssa had on the day as she led the women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Swarthmore. Jenny Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Mindy Nagy (East Berlin, Pa/Bermudian Springs) each added goals as well while Sarah Newton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa/Coughlin), Sarah Hylsop (Richmond, Va/Collegiate School) and Erin Kelly (Lititz, Pa/Warwick) recorded assists. Senior Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) made her 69th consecutive start and had one save. She shared the Devils' seventh shut-out of the season with sophomore Tara McFadden (Chester Springs, PaGreat Valley), who had one save as well. The Red Devils will face Ursinus College on Tuesday in their home finale at 3:00 pm. Boxscore Gouin Nets Winner, Giorgio Gets 21st Shutout (Gettysburg, Pa) Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) scored the game-winning goal to lift Dickinson past Gettysburg 1-0 in Centennial Conference field hockey action on Wednesday. Gouin scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Red Devils (6-8, 2-4 CC) their second conference win of the season. Sophomore Quinn Dougherty made four saves
for the The Red Devils scored at the 5:10 mark of the first half and held off any Gettysburg scoring threats to capture their sixth win of the season. Gouin fired a diagonal shot into right side of the cage and past Dougherty for a quick 1-0 lead that Dickinson would not relinquish. Dougherty stopped the Red Devils' chance to take a two-goal lead with 30:40 remaining in the second half by saving an Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) shot. Dickinson took control in the first half by earning five penalty corners. The Bullets were awarded the next 12, but were unable to capitalize on those scoring opportunities. In the first half, Kate Hopkins ripped a shot that was stopped by Red Devils defender Michelle Coughlin (Hingham, Ma/Hingham) for her first defensive save of the day. Katie Lowe had two chances to tie the game in the first half but her first shot was stopped by Giorgio and the second shot went wide of the cage. Gettysburg's last scoring threat came when Meg Goddu had a one-on-one opportunity with just 3:34 left in the second half but could not get past Giorgio. The Red Devils return home to face Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 12:00 noon. Boxscore Muhlenberg Tops Dickinson 2-0 (Carlisle, Pa) -- The Dickinson College
field hockey team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to visiting Muhlenberg
on Saturday. Kristin Bruschi scored off an Alexa Sterbinsky assist with 29:18 remaining in the first half to put the Mules in front 1-0. The Red Devil defense lead by juniors Michelle Coughlin (Hingham, Ma/Hingham) and Erin Pollock (Cleveland Heights, Oh/Cleveland Hts) kept the Mules scoreless for the remainder of the first half. Muhlenberg came out strong in the second half and put the ball in the goal with 30:40 left on the clock. Holly Pico assisted Adrienne Verbich to bring the score to 2-0. Although Emily Greenlee (Schwenksville, Pa/Spring-Ford) and Emily Souder (Green Lane, Pa/Christopher Dock Mennonite) played strong on the attacking end, the Red Devils were unable to tally a goal.
The Red Devils travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday to face the Bullets at 4:00 pm. Boxscore More Overtime Heartache For Devils (Carlisle, Pa) -- The Dickinson College field hockey team suffered another heartbreaking defeat in overtime, falling to visiting Roanoke College 1-0 on Tuesday. The teams battled through 84 scoreless minutes before Roanoke's Sarah Lundgren found the cage with just 26 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) played outstanding, making 12 saves on the afternoon, facing seven shots in overtime. Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) kept the offensive pressure on for Dickinson, firing off five shots and controlling play in the midfield. The Red Devils have played five overtime games this season, going 1-4 in extra time with three 1-0 defeats. They slip to 5-7 overall. Roanoke improved to 10-3 overall, winning their fourth overtime game in six tries this fall. They return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg at 12:00 noon. Overtime Goal Lifts 16th-Ranked Hopkins (Baltimore, Md) -- The Dickinson College field hockey team faced its sixth nationally-ranked opponent this season, the second this week, taking on 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday. The Red Devils battled the Blue Jays through 74 scoreless minutes before a stray rebound found its way to the stick of freshman Meighan Roose, who netted the game-winner at the 74:13 mark in the first overtime. Senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) kept Dickinson in the game, holding Hopkins scoreless by making seven saves in regulation. Sophomore Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/The Collegiate School) gave an outstanding defensive performance, playing exceptionally well against the Blue Jays' penalty corners. Giorgio stopped the shot of junior forward Jenny Farrelly, but the rebound went right to Roose, who put it away, giving the Blue Jays their third straight win. Dickinson falls to 5-6 overall with five losses coming to ranked teams. They slip to 1-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils return home to face Roanoke College on Tuesday at 4:00 pm. Boxscore E'Town Tops Devils 4-1 (Elizabethtown, Pa) -- The Dickinson College field hockey team faced its fifth nationally-ranked opponent on Wednesday, falling to number 20 Elizabethtown 4-1. The Red Devils went in front 1-0 at the 21:04 mark of the first half as Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) tallied her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick). The Blue Jays struck back with a pair of goals from Brandy Espenshade in the final four minutes of the half, the last with no time remaining. Epenshade added another goal with 17:53 to go in the game and Kate Gwilliam rounded out the scoring at the 5:38 mark. Senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) stopped 14 shots on the day as E'Town held a 29-11 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corners. Boxscore Carlow Named CC Player of the Week Dickinson College midfielder Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) was named the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for her performance against York College and Swarthmore. The junior scored both goals in Wednesday's 2-0 shut-out win over York and then assisted Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) on the game-winning goal against Swarthmore on Saturday. The Red Devils battled Swarthmore through 90 scoreless minutes before they finally broke through, topping the Garnet Tide for the first time since 1994. With back-to-back shut-outs last week, the Red Devils have raised their season total to five, holding teams scoreless in all five victories. team battled the Garnet Tide to the second over-time period and eventually
tasted victory Saturday afternoon. With 9:23 remaining in the second over-time period Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) assisted Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) for the game winning goal. Carlow and freshman Lauren Moag (Baltimore,
Md/McDonogh) controlled the attack, together tallying 11 of the
18 shots taken during the over-time. Erin Pollock (Cleveland Heights, Oh/Cleveland Hts) and Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/Collegiate School) dominated on the defensive end and helped lead the Red Devils to their first Conference win, and first win over Swarthmore since 1994. Dickinson remained strong throughout the entire 91 minutes and was determined to end the day with a win, bringing their record to 1-2 in the Conference and 5-4 overall. Boxscore Carlow Nets Two in Shut-Out Win (Carlisle, Pa)-- Dickinson College field hockey player Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) sent a special birthday wish to Mom on Tuesday in the form of a pair of goals in a 2-0 win over York. The junior forward scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke 18 minutes into the game and then added an insurance goal off an assist from Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) with 17:24 remaining. Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) made seven saves on the day as she posted her 19th career shut-out, adding to her own school record. Giorgio received solid defensive play from freshman Kathleen Martin (Boyertown, Pa/Central Catholic) and junior Michelle Coughlin (Hingham, Ma/Hingham). Devils Drop 5-1 Decision to Washington (Carlisle, Pa)-- Washington College (4-4, 1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half en route to a 5-1 win over Dickinson (3-4, 0-2) in Centennial Conference field hockey on Saturday. Senior Megan Daily (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) tallied two goals, including the game-winner to lead the Shorewomen while freshman Bonnie Loder (West Chester, Pa/West Chester East) added a goal and an assist. Loder opened the scoring 11 minutes in and Daily added back-to-back goals, the second off a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first half. Junior Erin Thomas (Newport News, Va/Denbigh) gave Washington a 4-0 advantage just 1:10 into the second half and Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) tacked on another with just over 14 minutes to go in the game. Junior forward Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) spoiled the shut-out, scoring on an assist from classmate Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) with 23:03 to cut the deficit to 4-1. Boxscore Devils Battle, Fall Short in OT to McDaniel (Carlisle, Pa)-- The Dickinson College field hockey team battled to over-time, but fell 0-1 in their Centennial Conference opener against 10th-ranked and unbeaten McDaniel College. The teams fought evenly for 70 minutes, but McDaniel capitalized in the first over-time period. Clara Hollingsworth assisted Kim Camponelli for the game winning goal with 11:58 remaining in the first over-time. Senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) kept the Devils in the game with some outstanding play in the goal. Giorgio turned back 13 shots, including a crucial save in the over-time period. Erin Pollock (Cleveland Heights, Oh/Cleveland Hts) and Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/The Collegiate School) provided solid defense, while Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) controlled midfield in transition. McDaniel Colleges remains undefeated, 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Conference while Dickinson falls to3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Boxscore Devils Dominate Goucher in 6-0 Win (Carlisle, Pa)-- The Dickinson College Field Hockey team out-shot Goucher 35-4 and held a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners en route to a 6-0 win here on Thursday. Juniors Andrea Carlow (McLean, Va/McLean) and Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick) each scored twice while freshman Sarah Newton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa/Coughlin) dished out a school-record tying three assists. Senior Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) and sophomore Tara McFadden (Chester Springs, Pa/Great Valley) combined to make four saves in Dickinson's third shut-out of the season. Emily Souder (Green Lane, Pa/CD Mennonite) started things off striking a rebound past Goucher goaltender Meghan Leyland at the 14:47 mark of the first half. Gouin and Carlow then scored off a pair of Newton's assists just over four minutes apart to put the Devils in front 3-0 with 1:21 remaining in the half. The second half was more of the same as Gouin netted her second goal, followed by Carlow's unassisted tally 2:49 later. Sophomore Colleen Haney (Swarthmore, Pa/Strath Haven) closed out the scoring at the 14:30 mark on Newton's third assist of the day. The Devils improve to 3-2 on the season as they prepare to begin Centennial Conference play next Wednesday when they host McDaniel College at 4:00. Boxscore Dickinson Tops 15th-Ranked Juniata 1-0 (Huntingdon, Pa) -- The Dickinson College field hockey team topped 15th-ranked Juniata College on the road 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Jenny Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored the game's only goal off a penalty corner at the 25:29 mark of the second half on an assist by junior forward Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md/Frederick). The Red Devils gave a complete team effort in the win as a solid defensive stand late in the game secured the win. Juniata made a final push in the final minutes, but the Devils responded to the pressure, handing the Eagles just their second loss of the season. The teams played even throughout the game, but it was Dickinson that would capitalize as they draw even at 2-2 on the season. Boxscore Third-Ranked Messiah Too Much For Devils (Grantham, Pa)-- The third-ranked field hockey team in the nation, Messiah College, proved themselves worthy on Tuesday with a 5-0 win over Dickinson. The Falcons took advantage of their home turf field, tallying three first half goals, including two from sophomore forward Danae Chambers. Afton Fisher put Messiah in front 1-0 with the game-winner 9:13 into the game, scoring off a lead pass from Kelly Stanwell. Stanwell would add a goal of her own later in the game as Chambers added an assist six minutes into the second half. The Red Devils held their own in the midfield for the better part of the game, but could not capitalize in the attacking third. Messiah improves to 2-1 in the season while the Devils slip to 1-2. Dickinson will travel to Juniata on Saturday and return home next Thursday to face Goucher. Boxscore Devils Blank Bobcats 4-0 (Carlisle, Pa)-- The Dickinson College field hockey team enjoyed its home opener with a 4-0 blanking of visiting Frostburg State. Caroline Gouin (Frederick, Md) and Emily Souder (Green Lane, Pa/Christopher Dock Mennonite) each tallied a goal and an assist for the Red Devils. Jenny Portillo (Bethesda, Md/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Jess Sedgwick (Easton, Md) each added goals as well while Lauren Moag (Baltimore, Md/McDonogh) and Kate Lyons (Barrington, RI/Wheeler) had assists. Boxscore Devils Drop Opener 2-1 in Overtime (Harrisonburg, Va)-- The Dickinson College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss in the their season opener on Saturday. Eastern Mennonite's Kristin Moyer scored off a Stephanie Derstein assist just over five minutes into the game to put the Royals on top 1-0. Dickinson's Sarah Hyslop (Richmond, Va/The Collegiate School) tied the game at the 8:08 mark of the second half. The sophomore defender followed up off a penalty corner with an unassisted strike for her first goal as a Red Devil. Dickinson made a strong push late in the game, but could not put the Royals away, sending the game into overtime. Derstein was there again for EMU, tallying the game-winner off a penalty corner at the 11:26 mark of the first overtime. Hyslop played a solid game all-around while senior goaltender Marissa Giorgio (Rehrersburg, Pa/Tulpehocken) kept the Devils in the game with some outstanding play in the goal. Giorgio made 13 saves on the afternoon as the Devils slip to 0-1. Dickinson was scheduled to host Wilson College on Thursday.
