The annual meeting of the Oral History Association will be held 25-28 September 1997 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans, Louisiana. The theme for the conference is "Looking in, Looking Out: Retelling the Past, Envisioning the Future." Session topics will include uses of oral history for business, schools, and museums, how current reflection alters and shapes memory and identity; World War II and the home front; land rights, public history and ecology; religion and identity; shifting categories of racial and ethnic identity; bohemian culture and the arts; social migration and migration; international oral history projects; introductory and technical workshops and a full-day teachers workshop.
New Orleans, the Big Easy, birthplace of jazz, is home to some of the finest restaurants in the world. The city's culture and history have been shaped by a unique mix of French, Spanish, Anglo, African and Caribbean influences. The conference site is located on Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter, where it all comes together, within walking distance of museums, shops, restaurants, blues and jazz clubs, the French Market, Jackson Square, Cafe du Monde, and the Aquarium of the Americas. Tulane and Loyola Universities, the Garden District, and Audubon Zoo are all on the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, and the New Orleans Museum of Art is an easy bus ride. As in Philadelphia, locals will lead groups to their favorite restaurants and night spots. So come "pass a good time" with us and "laissez les bon temps roulez!"
