The Northeast Conference is delighted to congratulate Dr. Vicki Galloway, recipient of the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture.
Although now on the faculty at Georgia Tech, Vicki lived and worked for many years in our region, and the scope of her influence is, in any case, national. We at the Northeast Conference have been privileged to publish several of Vicki's most significant pieces.
Many of those who wrote on her behalf noted that Vicki has, in the words of Isabelle Kaplan, "a genius for translating theories into very practical application": the number and unique impact of her publications demonstrates her contribution to the scholarly discussion of culture in our field; her participation in conferences and workshops makes clear that she is prepared to share the "fruits of her labor" with colleagues at all levels; her course titles and programmatic innovations illustrate her commitment to learners, regardless of their motivation or orientation. She is a model for all of us and an inspiration to the profession in its efforts to understand what culture is, how it is "learned," and thus how it can and should be taught. We will need her brilliance, her insights, and her experience in the coming years as we seek to implement the culture standards in classrooms across the country.
Vicki, congratulations!
