Professor of French Laura Franklin, who teaches at the Alexandria Campus and through the Extended Learning Institute, is the recipient of the ACTFL Faculty Development Program-Houghton Mifflin Award for Excellence in Foreign Language Instruction Using Technology with IALLT. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) presents the award yearly in recognition of excellence in the integration and use of technology at the post-secondary level. Franklin will accept the honor—which comes with a $500 cash award—at the ACTFL annual meeting in San Antonio on November 16.
Franklin received the news while attending a MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching) conference and expressed certainty that her active participation in that organization played a role.
“It means so much to me to hear this news while at a MERLOT conference. I am sure that this award has everything to do with the work I have done in this area of online learning. To me, the best thing is that it will help me share MERLOT with more teachers. It is also a great day for community colleges. Thanks for all of you who have given me the opportunity to do this work,” Franklin said.
In order to be considered for the award, candidates must have maintained ACTFL membership for three years and show evidence of integrating technology in courses within the framework of the National Standards for Foreign Languages.
