The Northeast Conference warmly congratulates Frank Medley, 2003 recipient of the ACTFL/Steiner Postsecondary Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education.
Now retired from his position as Chair of the Department of Modern Languages at West Virginia University, Frank has contributed unstintingly of his time, knowledge and talents across the nation and around the world. Bob Terry, writing on Frank's behalf, notes his "strong role in the founding of the Caribbean and Latin American Language Conference," as well as his "work with the National Institute of Higher Education School of Languages in Trinidad and Tobago." Nadine Olson comments that all graduate students should enjoy the benefit of Frank's mentoring and professional friendship. Carmen Chaves Tesser recalls working with him on an AATSP handbook and calls him "an exemplary professional." Others refer to his vision, his commitment to the future of our profession, his research and publications, his ability to combine boldness and diplomacy. Everyone mentions his personal warmth, generosity, and sense of humor.
We at the Northeast Conference are permanently indebted to Frank for his leadership. He was at the helm of our organization for a series of critical decisions in a challenging year, yet he never failed to make each of us feel as though he had time for whatever concerned us. The volume produced during Frank's chairmanship, Agents of Change for a Changing Age, is -- in its remarkable breadth and depth of vision -- a reflection of his beliefs, his knowledge, and his hopes.
We salute Frank and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor. |
